End of Life Doulas Working with Mainstream Healthcare

Quality of Life Care is partnering with two other leaders in the end of life doula training and development arena--Teaching Transitions and International Doulagivers Institute--to offer an innovative training that healthcare agencies, hospices and hospitals can count on. 

​The National Professional End of Life Doula Certification is the 

combination of all our backgrounds, more than 70 years total of specific experiences relevant to the emerging end of life doula role. 

We are inviting brilliant minds to partake, trainers and participants alike, as that is what it will take to accompany people through the healthcare system as they are in advanced illness and dying.

There is no easy answer, no simple set of templates, no time to wait for "perfection." We need as many boots on the ground as possible at this time, pointing people in the right direction. We need to make sure our families and neighbors are not falling through the cracks. We need to help them find palliative physicians and clinics in their area. We need to show the new generations of doulas how to work with institutions, healthcare providers and affiliates of healthcare organizations. 

What people need are the pearls of wisdom that we know, having been in the trenches ourselves for years. You don't learn this in medical school, nursing school or any other school, other than "the school of experience." We are going to save people years of having to go through what we did to get this information.

We are providing CEUs, so yes, there will be post tests for all and proof of attendance as you digest a weekend of expertise you cannot find anywhere else that is wrapped in the incredible package we are providing. We are not going to spit facts at you or teach you what you can easily find on the internet. We are going to teach you critical thinking skills, practice pearls, wisdom handed down from the grandmothers and the latest in the healthcare world. We have it all covered.

We will bring you a jam packed training. If you choose to join us, you will be learning not only information and resources to store for later, but actual practical gems to implement Monday morning. You will receive your Certification after the weekend training that signifies you have been taught everything it takes to be the best end of life doula serving alongside of mainstream healthcare today and in the years to come.

We also will be providing 3 months of ongoing mentorship as you apply all we taught you. We will also be giving you a calendar of what to be doing for the next 12 months to successfully implement what you learned in the weekend and the 3 months of mentoring, making the most of your training. 

The time is here for as many doulas as possible to learn what is essential when supporting families and healthcare professionals who are actually working on the front lines right now.

There are many places and ways an end of life doula may serve. They are all valuable and powerful. This particular training focuses on the doula-healthcare connection. We want to work within healthcare as well as along side it here. Others may want to work outside of it. All are good, all are needed to care for the people we strive to serve well. I hear from people every day who say they want to be part of changing the bad patterns and practices we are immersed in and help bring solutions from every angle. Its obvious to see there is a place for all of us.

There is a healthcare crisis now and we are committed to responsibly getting as many people up and running in the most supportive way possible, without charging thousands of dollars.

Patty and Suzanne and I are successful trainers and business women ourselves and we want to share the wisdom and the knowledge to the next generation of doulas who are hungry to help bridge the gaps presently in the system. We all know the gaps are there. Many books are written about it. We are part of the solution of putting theory to practice and getting out of our head and into our communities.

One of the most beautiful benefits of the training development I must say is the friendship that is developing between us. The synergy is off the chart! Little did I know we would become friends as well as develop a brilliant training process. I'm humbled by their genius and grateful for this experience to participate in something so huge in its purpose: to help bring real solutions to the present healthcare crisis through the use of doulas. 

We know that the clinicians in healthcare organizations want to serve people well. The problem is, there is not enough time built into the system to do so.

Enter the end of life doula.

We are an adjunct to any team and may not only provide presence, witness and practical help but also advocacy, reinforce teachings of the healthcare team and help families be compliant with medical advice. And really, there is so much more we can do. A better definition of an end of  life doula per the National End of Life Doula Alliance is:

            End-of-life doulas provide non-medical, holistic support
            and comfort to the dying person and their family, which
           may include education and guidance as well as emotional,
                                    spiritual or practical care.

This weekend, Sept 27 - Sept 30, will begin with a bang and end with a very personal experience. We begin with a hospice training on how to utilize doulas now in your hospice or healthcare organization, followed by Sean Cunningham's (director of the "Friday the 13th" series) film "Nurse with the Purple Hair" with Sean and Michelle LaSota (star of the film) present as well. Then 3 days of stellar training, followed by a laser focused business post conference Intensive on Sunday, where each person who joins us will leave with their own personal marketing plan.
