New Death Doulas, you can help now during the pandemic

Covid has turned us all upside down. And there is something new doulas can do right now.
I hope you all are keeping safe during the pandemic.

Being a doula in training during covid times is something you could never have anticipated. So many of you have been looking forward to your practicums, and learning “on the job” with nearby hospices.

Know that if you are a new doula or in a training program right now, you are known in your own circles as someone who “knows about death and dying” (whether you really do or not). You probably are the most comfortable with all of this than any others in your circles.

People are watching you. They may be turning to you specifically as a guiding light. They are watching you to see how you are handling everything. You may not even be aware of this.

They are curious to see how someone like you will respond to this. How do you handle the uncertainty? What are you doing to be helpful? You do not have to be an experienced death doula to help during the pandemic now.

All of us who are interested in doing more than we are right now in our lives CAN do something right now, whether we have years of experience or not.

Know that your love and sincere desire to make a difference is enough right now. You don't have to wait until you complete your studies or have more experience.

Practice your skills of how "to be" with people. In the meantime, you may want to enjoy our free mini training HERE which goes over the best things to do when someone you know is dying.

Being there for others in new ways can be scary I know. It doesn't have to be though. When you come to the situation with curiosity and love, and not with "a plan to help" it is surprising how much people will say your visit was welcome and pleasant.

Hang in there! You will be able to serve soon in the ways you wanted. And we will be safe in the process.

love, Deanna
